Needing a second vehicle is like saying you need two hands. Technically, you can get by just fine with a little extra work if you have just one but everyone knows two is easier. You know, except for that pesky thing called a car payment. Especially when you watch your paycheck flutter away out the window as your student loan |
payment comes due. Sucks so so badly. Thankfully, you can always attend a state surplus sale! Most state government vehicles are very well maintained and you could even score new tires on a vehicle you buy from them (like I did). They aren't shiny new for the most part. Usually they have more than 100k miles put on them but will generally stay sound for a long while unless you're terrible about normal upkeep.
At least, that's how it is here in NM. And you can find anything from sedans to mini vans to trucks.
And it's also how I managed to purchase a second vehicle. We don't make enough to afford an extra car payment and hospitals are far enough away that my hubby and I decided a second vehicle would make us feel more secure, especially in the event that our clutch gives out again in our first car.
The car we purchased today (for a grand total of $1,000) is in great condition with only some minor cosmetic damage on the outside of the car and it needed an oil change and new battery. Things that were easily fixed since we budgeted $1,500 for a new car.
But be warned if you go to a state sale surplus; GET THERE EARLY. People swarm for the inexpensive vehicles because they are getting a really good value for them. Especially people who fix them up and turn around to sell them. Also, be prepared to scan the vehicles quickly and go with your gut. Most places won't allow you to test drive them but you will be allowed to listen to how they run (once they get a quick jump).
And the best part of it all? No car payments.
Also, I've added an awesome new recipe for pie! I love pie so if you have any favorite recipes for pie, please let me know about it so I can try it out and maybe even post it!
